the source of the of the article is basicly about comic books and how parents think its a waste of time , their child to read . a editorial is an article in a publication expressing the opinion of its editors or publishers. the reason why i think its important that newspapers include editorials in theier papers so that you can see what the person that wrote or edit the article felt , or if they agree ro disagree . The comic book project is about giving children opportunity & collaborate on often complex stories and characters that they hte revise ,m publish and share with others in their community . The reason why i think Mr.Bitz created this program was because he found that children had a struggle with jsut reading a regular book . but if you put a little fun to it it would be interesting to them . comics books in my opioin help students develop a better reading & writing skills because , the author can state their own opioion and the student can respond to it , agree or relate to it , and also make them wonder .to me thats creative .

ReplyDeleteThe main source of this article is basically Michael Bitz and the teachers who have use this program. What I think an editorial is, is the publication expressing the opinion of the publisher. The reason why it’s important to a newspaper is so that people can hear the opinions and points of views from the writer. What the comic book project is, is a special program designed to help children improve their reading and writing skills by providing a fun and intrusting way to teach them. He created this project because I guess his students were struggling. I don’t really now anything about NYC schools but I hear they are kind of bad and I’m assuming he really wanted his students to learn. I think that using comic books as a tool for learning is very smart; because students are learning how to read and write in a fun way. I think that you can learn while enjoying your self’s. It helps a lot because now students have something to look forward to.

Now, on to our thread subject:
As you all may remember, I am a huge supporter of using comic books in the classroom, and I have great respect for Mr.Bitz and the Comic Book Project for a number of reasons.
To begin with, students today are far more visual thinkers than students in generations past. The visual aspect of comic books makes it much easier for students who may struggle with the "context" or vocabulary words on the page to understand what the author means or what a character is saying. So comic books can be a great tool for helping students develop their reading comprehension skills.
Having said that, I would not suggest that we replace novels or textbooks all together. There is something wonderful about being able to look at a jumble of letters on a page, process them in your brain, and create a whole world inside your mind. When someone does the visualizing for you, you don't really get to use your imagination as much, which is the one thing that I have against illustrated texts. For example, I hate it when I see a movie that is based on a book before I have read the original work. I like to be able to decide for myself what Dumbledore or Minas Tirith will look like. (See what I did there? Like I constantly told you, considering the other viewpoint makes you seem reasonable and strengthens your argument).
But as an additional resource for teachers to use or for students to learn from, I think comic books are just fantastic and should be widely read. I have always been eager to challenge the notion that chapter books and novels are the height of human creativity. I have never understood why educators frown upon the use of comic books, newspapers, or magazines. Nor have I ever heard one good reason that teachers and parents should discourage students from reading anything but long works of fiction. That's just ridiculous, old timey thinking. That kind of attitude only turns kids away from the joys of reading. Comic books and magazines (with the exception of TigerBeat) can help students to foster a love of literature. This, in turn, will lead them to pick up novels and books w/o illustrations.
It worked for me. Believe it or not I didn't come out of the womb reading Proust (a very difficult author). The first things that I really loved to read, the things that I would stay up late and read under the covers with a flashlight, were Calvin and Hobbes comics and an illustrated book of Greek myths. It was years before I really began to lose myself in novels. And I turned out to be an English teacher, so I must have been doing something right.
The final reason that I'm all about using comic books in the classroom, is that they are totally awesome. This point is an absolutely inarguable fact, and if you disagree, I will fight you. Just kidding, violence is wrong. Be like Gandhi kids, OK? I mean it.(Or I will probably never be invited to guestblog again.)

Well , from my expirence , i never liked reading , but when I started to read manga it help my english improve more . The books became interesting and i payed more attention more to the text .

What i think about this article is that comic books help kids get into readin.i have a personal experince because theres this kid in my building who always asking me to reaD mangas and every time he finishes it he ask for a new one! my mom was very pround of me because im changing a boys life. what i think about the project is that they will be able to make there own comic books and present them to other students liek them selves and be able to inspire them to like reading and build there reading skills as well.the source of this article is New york times.com. the way it helps them is that it has words that a kid will understand and that it will get them more into reading. The source of this article is to state a new way to learn and teach with using an object most importantly a different kind of book to engaged students by The New York Times. An editorial is a section in a newspaper that includes the Author’s P.O.V about a certain topic of their choice or not. I think it’s important to include editorials because it adds a personal touchy effect to a newspaper. It’s nice to read somebody else’s opinion and actually have an “I agree”, “I disagree” etc reaction or just be able to relate. Also it’s refreshing not to read completely facts but emotions for once. The Comic Book project is a program that started in 2001 by Michael Bitz to explore /push the creativity of kids out in comics; it has spread to more than 850 urban and rural schools across the nation. Now it more popular than ever given that the current obsession adolescent have with comic clubs and manga, popular comics in Japan. I think Mr. Bitz created this program to let out the creative side and expression of kids. Moreover to get them to be engaged into something productive as well as positive Also to put attention to the Arts seeing as it’s a subject not given much consideration and money, plus the main focus are Math, English, etc and not on kids expressing themselves. I think using comic books helps students to develop their reading and writing skills because comic book create a sense of expression or imagination and if you can dream/imagine it, you can write it. So it will expand your writing and it will make it easier to clarify the text because they can visualize it better, it gives an idea. Lastly it gives kids their own world full of possibilities!
ReplyDeleteI agree with Kenneth that comic books are creative so it will lead people to write creative stories because they have the visual idea of how to write what they want. Also I agree a lot with Mr Peri that we shouldn’t replace out traditional nooks they are just as great it’s just that comic books have a special aspect to them since they are visual. Personally that visual aspect is helpful since not all books have pictures when you need it the most. Next I think if helps you to understand certain vocabulary given that they draw it out for you.

I would say that Mr. Blitz created this program in order to help struggling readers to understand and interpret both ELA and writing skills. Mr. Blitz is like a great comic god for creating this program! I mean, by using comic books and graphic novels, students are more interested in their class. Also, while students are having fun with their favorite comic books & graphic novels, they are developing their reading and writing skills. This is just an AWESOME technique that all teachers should use in order to teach their students ELA and writing skills and to have the student's full attention.

No you wont you will have to learn how to have harder reference books and how to comprehend them the exact same way.

ReplyDeleteIt seems that based on all these comments, some of my peers have had experince reading comic books and that for most of them, they had seen an improvement in their reading level and their reading comprehension skills. Ditto with Keisha with what she said about getting readers more interested in reading. It not only improves the reader's skills, but it will definetely improve their creativity too!!

I never understand why educators look down at comic books as if it were some sort of mind control. Also, why do both teachers and parents discourage comic books and prefer long pieces of fiction?? This is happening through a program called " The Comic Book Project" it was started by a Mr.Micheal Bitz.The piont of the project is to give kids choice not all kids learnt he same way so we shouldn't treat them like they do. What a lot of people don't understand is that people have different ways of learning and some like myself may be a better visual learner. It doesn't make people better than others just because they learn differently.

An editorial is an article relating to or is stating opinions or giving perspectives. The Comic Book project is basically an organization made to make reading and writing more fun and be more appealing to the students. Also, it enhances children’s learning abilities in reading, writing, AND drawing. Mr. Bitz organized the program to make learning fun and to show teachers that comic books can develop a student’s reading and writing skills. I’ve read manga comic books and it made me understand certain words a little more and it improved my drawing! =)

Comic books take the boring subject of a book to a greater better way for the reader. So they now use comics in their way to teach kids. It's easier, kids enjoy it and the lesson is thought. Also, I agree with Mr. Peri, especially when he said that some students maybe more of visual learners (learning by looking at pictures) instead of learning by just looking at words. First of all, comic books have more of an understanding to most students who love pictures then chapter books that have words. But, any student can learn in which way is comfortable with them.
ReplyDeleteI agree with kiesha my dad thinks reading comics are a waste of time. That thier not teal books. That the pictures can sometimes be bad but sometimes can really give you a good sense of what's going on. Like an image. So he thinks of it in two ways.
ReplyDeleteI would also like to agree with Emily because, like I said before, most people of today are visual learners. By the way, a lot of young people, such as my self love to read magazines, manga, and all in all something with pictures. As Emily said, it does make people be more creative in what they do in the world of literature.
ReplyDeleteI also agree with Mr.Peri, that eventhough comics are cool and fun not ALL books should be replaced by comics. There are some books that are really good, and catch the readers attention without pictures. Just descriptions, and they can give you mental pictures just as well as comics.
ReplyDeleteThe source of the article is the effect of comic books on children.An editorial in my opinioon is basicly a regular newspaper article with the same aspects of a newspaper articles but a reader based on his/her opinion can edit it with suggestions, thoughts or even just to add on something the writter might have missed.Its imporntant for newspapers to include editorials because it sort of gives a more relaxing break feeling other than reading facts or events all the time.The comic book project is what i consider a teacher strategy to get fun into school leading into learning.The comic book project started in 2001,its goal was to spread comic books in New york schools.But converting a comic book from just being entertaining but aswell as educational.Mr.Bitz probably created the program beacause he probably wanted to put a spin on things.I think it helps students due to the fact that comic books for most adolcents are very attractive and kids love to learn from attracted things.

The source of this article is from the editorial section of the New York Times. Editorial is an article that its main purpose is to express opinions towards a specific topic. I think that it is important for newspapers to include editorial articles into their newspapers so that the reader can have a different point of view relating to the topic discussed. The Comic Book Project was started in 2001 by Michael Bitz . It was created as a new learning strategy for students, it was intended to help students to learn how to plot, draw, write, revise, publish and share their own comic books which can also help them in other parts of their education. I think that Mr. Bitz started this project to help struggling readers and to help teachers teach in a more proactive manner. Using comics help slow learners how to read and write because they can make connections with the pictures, learn to read along while understanding the plot.

But the reason they can not bring their own comic books because it will be interupting their learning time. So they did a time when kids can do comics. Is true no one is saying that they're just stating a point here about how comic books are "another" way for a person to learn.
ReplyDeleteAbove all, I think that having comics in the school is a great way to learn. Few reasons why is because they have 'pictures'! Everybody loves pictures, and they enjoy reading with pictures along the side. I say that comics are very useful because I could relate in "Latin" class. Our Latin teacher sometimes uses Latin comics as "do nows". But enough about that, there are many people in the school, or in the world who would rather learn from pictures (and words) instead of words alone. The object of this is that some people like to add a little bit of "life" into there lives by having a simple drawn out picture instead of plain ole' English words aliened in boring rows. In conclusion, all classrooms should be filled with wonderous comics that should rejoice the many faces of happy students.

ReplyDeleteThe source of this article is a website called www.NYTIMES.com. An editorial is when authors put their opinion in to another authors work. I think it is important for newspapers to include this because not everyone has the same opinion and sometimes it's best I there is different opinions for different people to agree on. The Comic Book Project is a project that help's people with a low reading level. This is a way for kid to read in a fun way. It is not always easy to just tell a child to read you have to work with them step by step. My thought is that since she was a elementary teacher she saw how some kids struggled in reading. She just wanted to help them in a way that they would want to join. I think that comic books is a better way to teach kids because it helps to describe actions in a very specific way and also they show pictures to show them how that action looks.
